We had a great experience at Charleston Auto Sales. We purchased a Subaru for our daughter, because it is one of the best cars on the market... They all have head gasket and timing belt issues that are common, which Jim replaces, with new, on most of the cars he sells, which is great! He has specialized in Subaru's for years and knows the ins and outs. We were able to test drive the vehicles we were interested in and all our questions were answered. It was very nice to deal with a small business man that at no time made us feel pressured.
Hands down this was the finest used car buying experience I have ever had from anyone anywhere. Jim and his crew at Charleston Auto Sales are honest, friendly and they are definitely not the pushy. I never felt pressured to buy a car and that was a great feeling of relief. I was free to test drive as many cars as I wanted and after spending almost 2 hours driving several cars I selected my 2001 Subaru Forester. These guys do a lot to prep work on their cars before they sell them and that includes replacing timing belts, replacing head gaskets, oil changes, detailing and in my case new tires and a front wheel bearing replacement. For me the car was a huge bargain for $4,000. It was an old car and I wasn't going ot have to be saddled with those maintenance bills later. A week after I drove away from the sales lot the check engine light came on and Jim told me to bring it back. When I did he had his mechanics stop what they were doing and they fixed the issues and get me back on the road. I was very impressed with the way they took care of my car's problems (there were two) and I drove away very satisfied. I seriously wonder how many other dealers would have treated me like that since my car was so old and I had been gone for so long. Based on my experience in dealing with Jim and his crew I feel very confident in recommending Charleston Auto Sales to anyone who is looking for a used Subaru.
Shopping for a Subaru Forester for my son and found Charleston Auto Sales with good reviews so we checked out the inventory. Found a 2009 Forester XT with 49,000 miles and clean car fax. My son emailed and texted Jim about the car and everything sounded positive. I called Jim, the owner, and asked some specifics about the car. What does Dealer Certified mean? Jim answered that it means that the care has been checked out and will need nothing in the near future as best that they can tell. I asked if the car had any visible leaks? Jim told me that his mechanics checked it out and he personally looked at this car and it was dry underneath. No leaks! Everything was good so we drove THREE hours to confirm what Jim told us and buy the car. We arrived and the initial appearance was positive. Jim and a young lady named Rachel greeted us upon arrival and brought the car out for inspection. The car was clean and everything worked. Great start! On my walk around I noticed a small ding on the front passenger side corner, no biggie for a 8 year old car. I looked underneath to see if there was more damage and there wasn't. While I was looking underneath I checked for leaks and that's where I became concerned. A noticeable oil leak at the valve cover! Drip, drip! I was concerned but we drove the car anyway. Ran good, brakes good, steering good.... then 1 mile away from dealer CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on! We returned to the dealer and Jim checked it out and found a cam sensor was bad! He played it off saying that when Subarus sit sensors go bad. He told another couple that were looking the same thing about a dead battery while we were there! BEWARE! The Subaru we looked at after a THREE hour drive was not as represented. I asked specific questions and got answers from the owner then the car was not as he said.
Jim, the owner, was great to work with. I went to look at his cars about two and a half years ago but did not find one that suited me. Got a car somewhere else but was in an accident and it got totaled. Went back to Jim because I had a great experience working with him before and found a Subaru I love in March. Engine lights came on within a week of purchasing it and he was more than willing to fix it for me and have not had any problems since. He is knowledgeable about the cars but super laid back and not pushy, which I very much prefer in a dealership. I have texted him questions since and he always is quick to answer. I have sent two other people to get Subaru's from him and they both are very happy with their cars. Thanks Jim!
