I have 2 cats and a dog. We recently moved to West Ashley and chose Bees Ferry Vet because it was recommended by our dog walker. They have been fantastic with our animals.
I used to work in the veterinary field and have had the opportunity to work with many veterinarians over the years - both holistic and non - and I personally would not recommend this veterinary practice for your pet.
I've seen 2 different vets here and both were great with my animals and very thorough with their explanation of what to expect in the visit and what to do for at-home care. They're open pretty late and have a pet pharmacy on site that is very convenient.
I would recommend them to anyone.
My cat became more and more depressed over the next couple of days so I lowered the Metronidazole by half and gave it just once a day and surprise - it resolved! I kept the probiotics and fiber going (at less than half the original dose) for a few days longer than the Metronidazole to ensure he had more “good bacteria” in his system than bad. Things seem to have resolved finally, but if I hadn’t followed my instincts I doubt we would have made any progress.
My dog has received consistently good care at Bees Ferry Veterinary Hospital. He's had to have surgery a few times. I'm always confident that he'll get excellent, loving care from the vets and staff here. They are always transparent with their pricing and will work with you on itemized bills to determine what is best for you and your pet. Also they have the friendliest staff of any vet I've been to.
Just this evening, I had a little bit of a scare with my oldest kitty and they were able to see him pretty much immediately and even though I was stressed and worried, they kept my little guy calm through all his tests and exams.
By the time she did call back, I was stunned that there was no apology for the delay in contacting me. I explained that I had stopped all meds the day before in order to get him to eat. We discussed the high dosage of Metronidazole, but she stood by her decision. We discussed the probiotics and supplemental fiber too and we decided to “start out” at a lower dose and “see how he does with that.” When I asked how long to keep him on the probiotics I was told to give it until the diarrhea resolved, which she anticipated would be 7-10 days initially, yet she prescribed enough probiotics to last 120 days!
I've been going here for the past 4 months after we adopted a cat, come to find that she was prego. Not knowing my cat was prego until she gave birth, BFV was very helpful over the phone giving me guidance on what to do. I've been taking the momma and her new 4 kittens for checks-up making sure everyone's in good health. Every time I make an appointment and come in the most I wait 5 minutes which is great! Also love the fact that they are open on Saturdays which makes it very convenient with someone with a busy schedule. Anytime medicine or shots are given to the kittens or the momma the nurses always call within 1-2 days to check in and see if anyone had a reaction, that to me shows they care! Great service great staff! Definitely recommend this vet
I took my cat to Bees Ferry because he continued to have diarrhea off and on after having a perineal urethrostomy at Charleston Vet Referral Center (an emergency clinic) back in September. I took him here because I wanted a holistic veterinarian and the reviews online were mostly positive. I made an appointment with Karen Ellis who hardly examined him and prescribed a rather high dose of Metronidazole (a pharmaceutical drug), Probiotic capsules, a Feliway diffuser (in case it was emotional), some kind of paste which was supposed to soothe his belly, a dewormer (in case he had tapeworms) and was told to pick up Psyllium powder at a health food store so that he’d have enough fiber in his diet. I was also given a prescription for another calming med that I had to purchase at their online store, which - after getting the bill $225 - I decided against buying.
Great people. Friendly staff!!! Great facility and longer hours.
As my cat declined to eat the food over the next three days, I put in a call to Dr. Ellis at 8 a.m. that morning. I received a call back (the following day at 3 p.m.!) AFTER I took a survey that conveniently appeared in my inbox. When asked if I would recommend this practice to other pet owners I said NO and commented that I didn’t think it should take 24 hours to call a mother back who was concerned about the health of her pet!
