Preferred this home to the Nathaniel Russell house because of its authenticity. You could truly feel how old the house was, it was not done-up with fake furniture posing as original pieces. However, the combo ticket was a good purchase because it allowed us to compare/contrast the two properties. This house has more history, the Nathaniel Russell house is more about period furniture pieces, wall treatments, decorations etc. so it’s really just what you prefer.
A wonderfully detailed audio tour of an amazing historic property. I appreciate the preservation choices they are making...but it’s still hard to see this beautiful structure unrestored. Still, well worth a visit and especially interesting in contrast with the Nathaniel Russell house.
The place is not restored and, in my opinion, it is better this way, as visitors can have the right feeling of how it used to be. The audioguide is very helpful and detailed. The house is also interesting to get insight into the life of slaves "owned" by rich and educated families.
The audio tour allows you to move at your own pace, stop and ask questions, taking your time to get all you can out of the experience. It was, by far, the highlight of our house tours. Takes you back to that time period.
Self guided tour was pretty awesome. This house is part of historic charleston foundation and buying the combo ticket for this house and nathaniel-russell house(meeting street) is a better option.
